Chapter 5 Notes

  • The Media is full of various News releases.  In order for your news release to mean any worth or to get noticed it must be newsworthy, timely, and well written.  News Releases are the basic element of every publicity plan.  When they are published it can bring an awareness and influence for decision making on various issues.
  • Planning worksheets and answering the five Ws and H are the basic first steps in writing a news release.
  • Different types of News Releases are: announcements, spot announcements, reaction stories, bad news, and hometown releases.  One key factor for a successful news release writing is to emphasize the local angle.
  • The news release has six components: organization name, contacts, headline, dateline, lead paragraph, and body text.  A seventh component can be a standard paragraph, often called boilerplate, at the end of the news release that provides information about the organization.
